The 12,000 hectares of marine reserve is what really makes Cabo de Gata Natural Park special. Because if an environment of almost virgin nature, spectacular landscapes, and a pace of life more leisurely than in the crowded cities we add the fact of being a marine reserve with serene beaches of clean water, we can say without a doubt that We are facing a very unique Natural Park, I doubt that there are many natural parks in the Mediterranean such as this, in Spain it is unique.
Because of its crystalline waters and rocky bottoms, which allow an excellent view under the water, this park is considered a paradise for diving or snorkeling (swimming with glasses and snorkel). For occasional swimmers on the beach, only one meter deep, you can see several species of fish, better equipped, between 5 and 10 meters deep, where you can see the greatest wealth of marine life. We must remember that to carry out diving with autonomous equipment is necessary the authorization that is processed in the Subdelegation of the Government in Almeria or in the offices of the Natural Park Cabo de Gata-Níjar of the CMA of the Junta de Andalucía.
The sea bottom in the park are of a great variety, we can find rock bottoms, sandy bottoms or funds covered by meadows of oceanic posidonia, varying in each of them the marine species that we will find. The most recognizable species are grouper, sea bass, melva, sargo, goatfish, mullet, mackerel, cuttlefish, squid, octopus and chirlas . There are many other varieties of fish and molluscs but lacking commercial interest. It's prohibited the underwater fishing and the use or possession of instruments that may be used for such fishing.
Among the plant species that we can find inside water are included huge meadows of Posidonia Oceanica, this marine plant, endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, is the habitat of many species of animals and responsible for part of the great biological wealth of the area. These prairies can be observed from the 15 meters of depth to entering in open sea. The presence of orange coral and other species of algae, are also noteworthy.
