The vast majority of hotels and rural houses of Cabo de Gata are designed to be integrated perfectly with the landscape of the Natural Park and adapted to its philosophy and ecologically committed to the natural environment. They are places designed to relax and from where to enjoy a privileged place, either spending the day in one of its beaches or coves or enjoy strolling through the unique landscapes of Cabo de Gata.

Hotels and Rural houses that preserve the typical building of Cabo de Gata.

The typical constructions of the Natural Park maintain a great resemblance to the houses of other parts of the Mediterranean coast. The exterior walls are whitewashed giving the typical white color to the villages. They are thick walls that maintain the climate of the interior of the house, built with stones and a mixture of lime and sand to join them, and with small openings to the outside to avoid excess light.

They are buildings of low height, rectangular plant, smooth lines and absence of borders. The covers are flat to take advantage of the little rainwater that precipitates in this region.

The interiors are encased in plaster, and all the rooms revolve around the kitchen that becomes the hub of the house, the place where the typical work of the field and service as the place of social relationship was performed.

Cortijos and traditional constructions

One of the main constructions and transformed into a symbol of Cabo de Gata are the cortijos, some of them reconverted in rural accommodations.

The origin of the cortijos goes back to the time of the Romans when these rural houses were constructed for the be a farm and to take care of livestock. Later these constructions received influence of the cultures that inhabited this earth, being of special importance the Muslim footprint in the cortijos of this zone.

The cortijos are formed by a main house to which they were adding buildings to him as it grew. Of special interest are the adjoined or built units in the vicinity such as: the chapel, the furnace, the pools, ditches, the era, water wheels or mills. A very representative cortijo of the zone is the Cortijo del Fraile.

Fisherman's Houses

Another type of typical house in Cabo de Gata are the houses of fishermen. In the park there are still the paradigmatic places of what is a fishing village, La Isleta del Moro and La Almadraba de Monteleva. They are villages formed by white houses where the streets ends into the beach, the place where find the barges stranded in the sand next to the fishing equipment.

In Las Negras and the Cabo de Gata neighborhood we can also find fishermen's houses, but their urban centers have grown and their main source of resources is not fishing but tourism.
