1. Wear a lifejacket and appropriate clothing
The life jacket is essential for any open sea navigation. The Kayaks company will provide you one and will teach you how to adjust it.
In summer we must protect ourselves from the sun. A kayak route spents between two and three hours, at this time we will be exposed to solar radiation, we must wear hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and T-shirt. In winter, although it can be cold, we should not wear jackets or clothes that, if it gets wet, could be heavy and sink to the bottom, the best option is a neoprene thermal suit.
Is also advisable that your wear footware, although to sail in kayak it is not necessary, yes that it is it if we stop in a cove with stones or rocky bottom. The most recommended footwear are the trekking sandals that are fastened, because the open flip flops can always leave us and go sailing sea inside.
2. Carry watertight bags for belongings
Nowadays everyone carries telephones, car keys or wallets that when they get wet broke. The guide monitor of the route carries a bag in the waterproof compartment of his kayak and we can give these objects so that they do not get wet. Another option is to take them ourselves in a watertight waterproof bag, remember to carry this bag tightly tied, because if it falls out it ends at the bottom of the sea.
3. Make the route with someone who knows the area
Each zone of coast has its prevailing winds, its currents and its tides. In Cabo de Gata the tides are negligible, but being a cape it has strong winds and sea streams, an expert monitor who knows the area will advise us and guide us through the best places.

4. Watch the weather forecast
In this case the wind is paramount, we advise you to check the wind forecasts in the area you are going to navigate before making the route, this is the most reliable page for it: windfinder. Companies that make kayak routes in Cabo de Gata, from 12 knots to up, look for alternative areas where to do the navigation. For example if there is east wind they go to the area of the cape, if there is a west wind to the San José, etc. With very strong wind do not navigate, bear in mind that in the sea the wind usually blows stronger than on land.
5. Learn paddling technique
A well done paddling is very important so that our navigation is efficient and we make the most of our energies. Semi-flexed arms, separation of our hands greater than that of our shoulders, sink the paddle in the water but not too much, etc. These paddling techniques are explained by the monitors before starting the kayak route.
6. Sit down correctly and sit up straight
Sitting with your back resting on the kayak seat, place your heels on the foot guides. Some kayaks have several guides depending on our height. The tips of the feet should face outwards and the heels towards the center of the kayak. The knees must be flexed up and out.
7. Row at a gentle pace
Do not give everything at the beginning, you must reserve the forces. Start at a smooth pace while your muscles are adapting to exercise, a time after, when we feel comfortable with the movements we can catch a faster pace, but at first slow and enjoy the experience. Above all we must be aware that we must make the way back, and reserve strength for it.
8. Do not go away from the shore and stay alert
The shore always has to be at a distance less than we can swim, get further from the shore than we can swim would be reckless because we never know what can happen to us. Stay alert, although kayaking is a safe sport the sea always has to impose respect. Kayak routes, apart from going with at least one guide, are always accompanied by a safety boat.
9. Do not get away from the group
Apart from the fact that it is dangerous to remain alone in the sea if you leave the group, you may miss the indications made by the monitor, who at any time can notify us of a sea stream area and the place through which we must pass. During the routes we must obey the instructions of the guide who is the person responsible for our safety and who knows the sea.
10. Move in the direction of the kayak, not the opposite
We refer to the centrifugal force that we suffer when we turn sharply, that is more noticeable in cars or on the train. Do not fight against the ship, go with him. If you rotate your kayak, continue your movement and direction with your body. Use the kinetic energy of the kayak in your favor. The kayaks used in the routes are very stable, but if we try to make strange movements in the opposite direction where we go, we can overturn. Here you can see some recommended kayak models to get started in this sport.
Back on to the beach
We have done about two hours of exercise and stretching is vital to avoid suffering from stiffness and feeling bad the next day. Remember that we have worked both arms and legs, we must perform upper body and lower body stretches.
During the kayak trip we made an effort, and especially in summer, we must hydrate. On the organized kayak routes, refreshments are offered to participants at the end of the route. Also, at the stop that takes place in a cove, half way of route, the monitor will offer us water and nuts to regain strength.
